Going to Market was once at the heart of community life. Village at La Floresta reinvigorates the market square for a new millennium. Like a traditional market square, a lively bustle exists on all sides, from the intersection of major arterial roads to the flow of pedestrian traffic from the orchard parking field. The center presents a welcoming, highly articulated face to all users and passersby. Though contemporary in massing, the site’s agrarian history helped shape the understated elegance of the architecture. Deep eaves, wood plank accents and metal slat awnings bring the past into the present. The Whole Foods anchor features a broad metal canopy which curves in all three dimensions, as if fashioned by the breeze itself.  The nexus of this ground-up retail and restaurant destination is the market oasis. This circular plaza is flanked by a large-scale catenary sculpture which the breeze sets in motion, paying subtle tribute to the region’s agrarian heritage. The circular plaza features a dynamic central fountain, colorful CorTen planters, village green and terraced outdoor seating groups which promote communal gathering and identity. Surrounding and overlooking the plaza, luxuriant dining terraces, associated with Whole Foods, Mendocino Farms and numerous chic restaurants, feature fireplaces, festoon lighting and ample ambience. The major streets and promenades of a larger master planned community, containing over a thousand homes, radiate from and visually connect with the pivotal space of the plaza. A xeriscaped park-like island and a wide, richly textured pedestrian promenade serve as interstitial zones between the car and the pedestrian-scaled retail experience. Wood storefronts along this primary pathway boast rich mahogany colors, nested in metal canopies and transom windows. The center draws from the cultural past to realize a vision for a community-oriented culture of tomorrow.
