The Point, El Segundo, CA –

This outdoor lifestyle center imbibes the vibrant, verdant culture of LA’s South Bay communities and redefines the concept of home by becoming the living room of the South Bay.

The former industrial site, set slightly below a busy intersection, offers shelter from the traffic and bustle at the street edge. Its high building volumes turn inward toward an expansive open air “living room” which welcomes locals and visitors to linger, gather, relax and enjoy. This lush central plaza plays host to uses formal and informal, from an outdoor event venue for parties, concerts and movies to casual meetings amongst local stroller brigades. Avant-garde site furnishings, an interactive fountain, a fire bowl and wood-planked outdoor dining terraces extend the invitation to stay and connect.

Upscale fashion-fueled shops and eateries feed off of this engaging environment. The dynamic blend of both local and regional shops is encouraged to take risks and explore boundaries. The result is a fresh mix of groundbreaking food concepts, lifestyle retail brands in inventive spaces, and services which interweave into the fabric of the community.

This home away from home is attractive, with its horizontal board surfaces, natural materials, and colorful accents. Its contemporary massing and detailing reinterpret the architectural vocabulary of nearby beachfront estates. It is inviting, suffusing a sense of comfort into its context and drawing locals and visitors to experience life together. It is a place where design succeeds in helping strangers become family.
