ABOUT ALHAMBRA PLACE
An under-performing retail center, which remained largely vacant for nearly a decade, has been transformed into a vibrant 10.6 AC mixed-use center. This new lifestyle center, with its mix of retail, residential and entertainment revitalizes one of LA County’s oldest communities and provides a new hot spot for the community, with something for everyone.
AO Retail Studio worked on the retail component of the new urban center, which involved the renovation of a two-story Mervyn’s building into a ground-level grocery anchor with a national retailer on the second level. The project also integrated an existing bank and included ground-up construction of restaurants and retail, totaling 134,000SF. This exciting destination features fresh, contemporary design textured with a diverse palette of woods and metals. Restaurants feature indoor-outdoor concepts facing a plaza designed with innovative lighting, site furniture and landscaping.
Tenants of the retail component of this Shea Properties development include Sprouts, Burlington, Bank of the West, The Big Catch, Blaze Pizza, The Habit, JJ’s Bakery, Maido Stationery, Verizon 4G Wireless, Vidorra, and Wingstop.
AO Multifamily Studio worked on the project’s 260-unit residential portion, which faces the retail center and offers easy pedestrian access to it. This four-story wrap building known as 88 at Alhambra Place features a wide variety of studio to three-bedroom units, surrounding a freestanding parking structure with shared retail parking. The luxury apartment community provides high-end interior finishes and amenities such as a curved lobby, resort pool, fitness center, outdoor living room, gaming and karaoke lounges and clubhouse. The building opens up to the street in a series of courtyards at its residential adjacencies, mitigating its mass. Along this frontage, it displays traditional brownstone elements with defined cornices and arched entryways. At the elevations adjacent to the retail portion, the building transitions seamlessly into a corresponding contemporary architectural vocabulary and materials palette.
Visible from city hall, the new mixed-use destination reflects the vision of a city moving into its future.
